Dr. Vargas has volunteered to spay and neuter our animals for the last 25 years. She has performed advanced surgery for many of our rescues including, amputations, eye enucleations, tumor removals, dentistry and even acupuncture! She has always been there for us and was part of our shelter becoming a no-kill sanctuary. Anyone that meets her knows she loves animals dearly as she is constantly rescuing strays and involved in their rehabilitation and adoption. She has many accolades but I know she would feel appreciated for this nomination. We definitely feel lucky to have such outstanding veterinarian with a big heart in our community!

My nomination goes to Dr. Mitse Vargas, owner and practicing veterinarian at Orchid Springs Animal Hospital, 615 Overlook Drive, Winter Haven. Tel: 863-324-6964. www.osahvets.comSophie is a spayed Shih Tzu, born May 5. 2003On June 5. 2011 she was checked in to Veterinary Healthcare Hospital following a seizure. Examined, treated and released. On June 16. 2011 at 2:14am she was returned and now admitted to the Veterinary Healthcare Hospital. She had been gradually declining over the past week, losing some 5 pounds while her respiratory rate had increased and PCV at 12 percent (48 to 50 being normal for her)During her stay she received a blood transfusion and fed intravenously, then prescribed Prednisone before being release to our veterinarian Dr. Mitse Vargas.Over time, Sophie was subjected to numerous blood panels which led us to believe the administering of Phenobarbital killed her immune system. Her bone marrow was not developing enough red blood cells. With the help from her former assistant, Dr. Kim Wilson, Sophie after several months of loving care, careful control of medications in accordance with blood work and the inclusion of acupuncture performed by Dr. Vargas, Sophie. some 12 months later has a PCV of 50 and weighs her normal 15 pounds.I am very grateful to Dr. Mitse Vargas for her knowledge and expertise in the treatment to Sophie and being able to bring her back to her normal daily activities
